Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

MirrorMirror 425With a condescending smile, she says,
“Look at yourself in the mirror.
How can you call yourself a real woman?”

How dare YOU command ME to look in the mirror?
I recognize the woman staring back at me.
Despite her shortcomings, she is a woman worth knowing
She is my loyal and faithful friend
I know her well.

She is a real woman, not fabricated or false
And when I look in the mirror, it is a real woman I see
Confident and insecure
Courageous and weak
Honest and deceitful

She is a real woman, not fantasy or fiction
And when I look in the mirror, it is a real woman I see
Selfless and selfish
Kind and hurtful
Brilliant and naive

How dare YOU command ME to look in the mirror?
I do not claim to stand before you perfect, and I do not expect you to understand me
But do not judge my actions or pretend to know the workings of my heart
I live and breathe, laugh and cry, just like you
I AM a real woman

How dare YOU command ME to look in the mirror?
With compassion, I ask you… when YOU look in the mirror
Who do YOU see?
